F is for Freeze- January 26-30
We missed our Monday class this week due to poor road conditions from the weekend ice! Wednesday and Friday students enjoyed some hands on learning by helping create a “frozen bubble” mixture before attempting to blow bubbles and watch them freeze. Unfortunately, it was a bit too warm for our bubbles to freeze over, but that didn’t matter, the kids had a blast just trying to blow the bubbles. We played with a lot of ice, got some silly photos, played in the barrel train and continued making new friends as we welcomed a new student into Friday’s class! We learned that water freezes at 32 degrees, turns to ice, and then melts as it gets warmer. Our melted snowman craft this week was a huge hit- a little shaving cream and elmers glue goes a long way with these kids! Students enjoyed decorating their melted snowmen with twigs, googly eyes, a little top hat and carrot nose, and plenty of fun sequins. We read books about a snowman who keeps a squirrel company as her marmot friend hibernates, and another about the northern lights! It was particularly cold on Friday, so we had our story time and craft time inside the farmhouse. The students were very happy to warm up and it definitely rejuvenated our spirits before we headed back outside to play. It can be a bit harder for attention spans to focus in such cold weather, but all of our play and child led learning more than made up for it. Play isn’t the prerequisite for learning, play IS the learning! What a great opportunity for students to learn resilience in these colder temps. Spring will be here before we know it!!!
